State Representative Fajardo Speaks to Teenage Parents (Santa Fe) – Representative Kelly Fajardo (R – Valencia) addressed the young parents who are members of NM Grads this morning at the capitol rotunda in Santa Fe.
NM Grads is a state funded education program for teenage up to 21-year-old parents which helps them get their general education diploma, or GED. Over the years the program has added on-site child care centers, career readiness, youth leadership, and fatherhood programs.
“I know what it’s like to be a young parent trying to finish school,” said Fajardo, a small business owner and mother of three, who had her first child at age 18. “My child became my primary motivation.”
The NM Grads students listened as Fajardo told her story of how she became a New Mexico state legislator, even giving out her personal phone number and asking them to call her anytime. “You can all be leaders in whatever you choose to do,” Fajardo said.
